    It’s every parent’s nightmare.

You send your child to school to learn in a safe place where the people who teach them care as much as you do.

Instead, the person at the front of the classroom or wearing the whistle in the gym is a sexual predator.

Allegations like this seem to pour forth weekly now. Already this month, two former Melissa High School teachers have been accused of an improper relationship with the same 16-year-old girl. A 59-year old former Lake Dallas teacher and coach was accused of misconduct with another 16-year-old girl. A third-grade teacher in Hurst-Euless-Bedford ISD is facing charges of indecency with a child. And an Irving ISD teacher’s aide is accused of an improper relationship with a 16-year-old in the district.

Predators seek out contact with children, so it’s hardly a surprise to find them in the clergy or the classroom or on the sports field. They will put themselves in positions of trust where they can be around children in an exclusive and private way.

The question is what parents, school administrators and the many, many good and honest teachers and coaches can do to protect children before abusers isolate them.
