Interim Columbia police chief Ruben Santiago said Wentzky allegedly had sex with the student in his Sherwood Forest neighborhood home in Columbia on multiple occasions. The alleged relationship lasted for several months, but police are still investigating exactly how long it had been going on, Santiago said.​

Richland 1 learned of the alleged relationship Dec. 27, when the student’s parents called Dreher High School principal Jeanne Stiglbauer, district spokeswoman Karen York said. The principal called the Richland 1 superintendent, who called law enforcement. Columbia police got involved when Forest Acres called about the findings in their investigation, Santiago said. Columbia police are continuing to investigate the allegations, he said.​

Interim Columbia Police Chief Ruben Santiago announces the arrest of a Dreher High School teacher accused of having an inappropriate, sexual relationship with a student.

Kinsley Wentzky (DOB: 3/17/1978) is charged with Sexual Battery with a Student 16 or 17 Years of Age (No Aggravated Force or Coercion).

Wentzky allegedly engaged in sexual intercourse with a 17-year-old male student at a Columbia home on several occasions.

CPD continues to investigate the duration of the relationship.

An arrest warrant was served on Wentzky by CPD this afternoon. A judge issued a $5,000 personal recognizance bond in the case.

CPD initiated this investigation as a result of gaining victim information in partnership with the Forest Acres Police Department.

Under the South Carolina Code of Law: SECTION 16-3-755 (Section B): Sexual battery with a student means:

(B) If a person affiliated with a public or private secondary school in an official capacity engages in sexual battery with a student enrolled in the school who is sixteen or seventeen years of age, and aggravated coercion or aggravated force is not used to accomplish the sexual battery, the person affiliated with the public or private secondary school in an official capacity is guilty of a felony and, upon conviction, must be imprisoned for not more than five years.
