    Bill OK'd by Assembly committee aimed at prosecuting teachers accused of abusing students outside NJ

    Teachers who sexually abuse underage students during trips out of state would face criminal charges upon returning to New Jersey, according to a bill approved Thursday by a state Assembly committee. Lawmakers said they were stepping in to fix a blind spot in New Jersey’s criminal laws. In many cases, state prosecutors cannot pursue charges against teachers who abuse students outside New Jersey. That’s because prosecutors and courts, with some exceptions, only have the power to act on events that happen within their legal territory, or “jurisdiction.” Bergen County lawmakers began pushing for legislative changes this year after an unsettling ...
