Michael D. Carattini, music teacher at Christa McAuliffe Middle School [Jackson School District], Jackson, New Jersey, "inappropriate relationship in the form of internet and e-mail communications with a 14 year old student"
We have been informed by the Jackson Police Department that McAuliffe Middle School music teacher Michael D. Carattini has been arrested.

The teacher was not in school Thursday and has been suspended pending the outcome of the investigation. According to the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office, the arrest stems from an incident that took place about five years ago. This is a police matter, which means the district is not at liberty to discuss it. However, we want our parents to know that we have filled the position temporarily and will be looking for a full-time, certified replacement.

We also want our parents to know that anyone who believes their children may need help processing this information is encouraged to contact the guidance office if they need assistance.
Prosecutor Ford said, “Our complaints allege that while employed as a teacher in the Jackson Township school district, Michael D. Carattini, 29, Toms River, engaged in an inappropriate relationship in the form of internet and e-mail communications with a 14 year old student. The communications were of a sexually explicit nature. The complaints do not allege any physical contact between the defendant and the victim. At this time, the allegations are related to inappropriate electronic communications, which would constitute violations of the child endangerment statute.

“The abuse allegedly occurred about five years ago when the victim was about 14 years old, and a student of the defendant in the school district. The victim, whose identity will not be disclosed, is now over the age of 18 and is no longer a student in the district. Due to the supervisory relationship of the defendant over the victim, and his status as a public employee, official misconduct charges have also been filed,” said Prosecutor Ford.
