A teacher in Chesterfield County, Virginia, faces a misdemeanor assault charge after allegedly cutting off a woman's hair while the two were embracing. The bizarre incident allegedly took place Friday afternoon in the parking lot of Elizabeth Davis Middle School. The woman and her platonic friend Melvin Hunt, the alleged hair cutter, were sitting in his car, WTVR.com reports.

The two had planned a trip together, but Hunt, 61, allegedly told the woman she did not need to travel with him. The woman told police that Hunt then asked her for a hug and when she leaned in, he allegedly grabbed her and cut off several inches of hair from her head, NBC12.com reports.​

[Melvin] Hunt’s neighbors knew something was wrong Sunday when police lined the streets of his North Chesterfield home. “I saw two cops pull up and one went on one side of the house, the another on the other side of the house they were looking all in the shed and all in the guys van,” said neighbor Browning Hyde. “I thought he was a nice guy everytime I talked to him, my Dad was totally shocked about the whole situation because he was such a nice guy we had no idea.”

Man charged in Chesterfield school teacher attack

Melvin D. Hunt, 61, who is employed with the Riverside School at 2110 McRae Road, was arrested Sunday and charged with misdemeanor assault. The alleged victim, a Davis Middle School physical education and health teacher, obtained an emergency protective order against Hunt after the attack, court records show. A criminal complaint filed by a Chesterfield police officer who took a report said that when he spoke with the woman after arriving at the public school about 3:30 p.m., she was missing about 8 to 12 inches of hair on the right side of her head.

The woman, 44, stated that Hunt came to her workplace Friday and she met him in the parking lot before getting into his vehicle to talk. While inside, Hunt asked for the keys to the woman’s car so he could put a letter in her vehicle for her to read later, the complaint says. The woman said she gave Hunt the keys and he placed the letter in the front passenger seat of her car and then asked the woman for a hug. As they embraced, Hunt grabbed her by her ponytail and cut off some of her hair. The woman said she realized what had happened after her hair fell to the ground, the complaint says. Hunt then walked away from the woman, threw her keys into a locked, fenced area of the school parking lot and drove off.​

Teacher Cuts Off Woman's Hair While Hugging Her

According to the victim, whose identity has not yet been shared with the public, she and 61-year-old Melvin Hunt were just sitting in a car not far from the local Elizabeth Davis Middle School at the time the man went all Edward Scissorhands. Thus, the woman remembers that she and the teacher were simply talking about a trip that they were supposed to take together, and that the 61-year-old man kept telling her that she did not have to accompany him after all.

The victim says that, at one point, Melvin Hunt asked if he could give her a hug. Since the two are friends (or, better said, used to be), she saw nothing wrong with this request. Hence, she let the 61-year-old man put his arms around her. Apparently, it was while hugging the woman that the private school teacher somehow managed to cut off several inches of her hair, Huffington Post informs. For the time being, it is unclear whether the man used a knife or a pair of scissors to give the victim the unexpected haircut.

It is understood that, after cutting the woman's hair, 61-year-old Melvin Hunt simply got out of the car and left. Since she was in quite a shock, the woman did not follow him or try to take revenge. However, as soon as she regained composure, she alerted authorities.
