John David Gates, 60, a fourth-grade teacher at Hewitt Elementary, was arrested Thursday morning on two counts of indecency with a child ... In the interview, the alleged victim accused Gates of touching her inappropriately while reading her stories, beginning when she was 5 or 6 years old and continuing until she was 10 or 11, affidavits state. The incidents allegedly occurred on Dendron Drive in Hewitt between 2003 and 2009.​

Dear Parents, ​

​

I am writing to inform you that Hewitt Police recently arrested Midway ISD employee John Gates, a fourth grade teacher at Hewitt Elementary, based on allegations from a non-school matter. ​

​

A release from the Hewitt Police Department specifically says, “The allegations occurred outside the scope of John Gates employment with the District and did not involve any students under his supervision.” ​

​

Although this is not a school-related incident, the district has been fully cooperative with police and other authorities in the on-going investigation of allegations against Mr. Gates. The safety of our children is of the utmost priority, and the district will do everything we can to protect the well-being of Midway students. Due to the nature of the allegations, Mr. Gates has not been in the classroom since October 9. ​

A fourth grade teacher at Hewitt Elementary School has been arrested for indecency with a child. On December 6, 60-year-old John Gates was arrested on two counts of indecency with a child and booked into the McLennan County Jail ... The claims happened outside of Gates' employment at the school and did not involve any students in his classes.​

 

KXXV: Midway ISD school teacher arrested for Indecency with a child (Dec 6 2012)

A longtime Midway ISD employee [John David Gates] was behind bars Thursday charged with two counts of Indecency with a Child, a second degree felony ... According to an arrest affidavit from Hewitt Police, a detective received a CPS referral about an outcry of sexual abuse made by a young girl. After speaking with the girl's mother, a forensic interview was scheduled at the Children's Advocacy Center. The victim said Gates touched her inappropriately. The affidavit said the victim told the forensic interviewer the abuse happened several times over the years.​

In an arrest affidavit signed by McLennan County Justice of the Peace Pat Richardson a Hewitt police detective says he was made aware of the allegations against [John David] Gates when a female victim came forward and reported that a man had been inappropriately touching her since she was about 5 or 6 years old. The affidavit says the man touched her inside her clothing while he read her bedtime stories. The affidavit says the victim reported the events happened several times until she was 10 or 11.​

 

KWTX: Hewitt: Ex-Teacher Indicted On Child Sex Charges (Feb 21 2013)

John David Gates, 60, was named in indictments charging continuous sexual abuse of a child, aggravated sexual assault of a child and three counts of indecency with a child by contact. Gates was arrested on two counts of indecency with a child in December 2012 but posted bond and was released. A subsequent investigation led prosecutors to present additional charges to the grand jury, which resulted in the expanded indictment.​
