    Officials at Kyrene Centennial Middle School contacted the school resource officer after another teacher reported seeing Giannopoulos inappropriately close to a student in his classroom, according to Sgt. Tommy Thompson with the Phoenix Police Department ... In an interview with police, the victim said that Giannopoulos would give her rides to school and he would park around the corner from her house so her parents wouldn't know. The victim also said she calls Giannopoulos "Grampa" and "Gino" and he has introduced her as his granddaughter even though it is not true. Detectives discovered that Giannopoulos and the student had exchanged hundreds of text messages, according to Thompson. He said many of them offered or solicited sexual conduct.
    Giannopoulos was arrested at his Gilbert home and said that he knew it was wrong but couldn't control himself, according to Thompson.

    District spokesperson Kelly Alexander said information about the allegations was shared with the school’s principal, Jocelyn Sims, and she began her an investigation on Feb. 28. This is Sims’ first year as principal for Centennial. “Pretty quickly into the investigation she believed that she had to contact Phoenix police, so she did that through our school resource officer (SRO) at Centennial,” Alexander said on Friday. “She reported whatever she had learned to the SRO, which is the police department, and they began their investigation.”

    A teacher at Centennial Middle School reported to administrators that James Giannopoulos, 61, was inappropriately close to a student at school, leading to his administrative leave, according to Phoenix police Sgt. Tommy Thompson. Officials contacted police on Tuesday to report the incident and an investigation led detectives to hundreds of text messages between him and a girl identified as a former student at the school, Thompson said. The messages offered or solicited sexual conduct, Thompson said. Thompson said Giannopoulos knew his actions were wrong, but he couldn't control himself.

Another teacher had noticed Giannopoulos was inappropriately close to a student and contacted the on-campus school resource officer and principal on Feb. 28, said Nancy Dudenhoefer, community-relations assistant director with the Kyrene School District. Giannopoulos was put on administrative leave Monday, she said. The Family Investigations Bureau was contacted Tuesday and began its investigation. The teacher told officers when he was arrested on Thursday that he knew it was wrong but that he could not control himself, Thompson said.

    According to police, the investigation turned up evidence that Giannopoulos and a former student allegedly exchanged hundreds of text messages in which sexual conduct was solicited and offered. Police did not release the age of the former student but said she's under age 15. Giannopoulos remains jailed on suspicion of luring a minor for sexual exploitation. He's been placed on administrative leave from his job.

School officials contacted police to report the incident and an investigation led detectives to several hundred text messages between him and a girl identified as an eighth-grader at the school, Thompson said. The messages offered or solicited sexual conduct, Thompson said. The text messages from the contact named "Grampa" began on July 8, 2013 through March 4, 2014. The 14-year-old victim said Giannopoulos, who she called "Grampa" or "Gino," would give her rides to school. Giannopoulos had listed himself as her school emergency contact list. Thompson said Giannopoulos knew his actions were wrong, and told police "I couldn't stop myself."

    A north Phoenix middle school teacher accused of a sex crime involving a former student has pleaded not guilty. James Giannopoulos entered his plea at his arraignment Monday in Maricopa County Superior Court.

    Kyrene teacher faces firing in harassment

    Another Centennial science teacher was arrested in March on suspicion of luring a minor. James Giannopoulos, who had been with the district since 1987, has pleaded not guilty. Giannopoulos is accused of sending hundreds of text messages soliciting sex from a former student, now age 15. Kyrene spokeswoman Nancy Dudenhoefer confirmed that Giannopoulos has been fired.
