    Sarasota County employee claims she was fired for reporting suspected child abuse

    A former supervisor with Sarasota County has filed a federal lawsuit alleging she was fired for reporting suspected child abuse by two Sarasota County sheriff’s deputies. Desiree Abelson worked at the Juvenile Assessment Center, where underage defendants are booked, processed and fingerprinted. In December 2018, two deputies brought a 16-year-old to the facility. She was visibly limping, her lip bruised. With a warrant for skipping court on battery and grand theft charges, the girl was running from authorities when she smacked into a wooden fence post.
