The principal and assistant principal of Stamford High School were charged Thursday with failing to report an inappropriate relationship between an English teacher and an 18-year-old student, police said. Donna Valentine, the 62-year-old school principal, and Roth Nordin, the 59-year-old assistant principal, were charged with failure to report. Police said an investigation revealed that the allegations of the sexual relation between the teacher and student were made known to the school's administration by several sources as early as December of last year – months before the alleged relationship came to an end.

Connecticut high school administrators failed to report student-teacher sex scandal — for six months: cops

Two Connecticut high school administrators knew one of their teachers was having sex with her student for six months, but never told anyone about the abuse, police said. Stamford police arrested Stamford High School's principal, Donna Valentine, and its assistant principal, Roth Nordin, Thursday. The two are charged with covering up a relationship between a 32-year-old English teacher and an 18-year-old student, NBC Connecticut reported. The two have been temporarily suspected from their jobs, the school district said. Police only found out about the alleged sex abuse after the victim reported it in June.

Stamford High principals notified months before reporting sexual misconduct, affidavit claims

Stamford High School principals were warned by at least five people that an inappropriate relationship was occurring between a teacher and student last school year, several months prior to reporting the concerns to police, a police affidavit claims. Police say instead of reporting the multiple warning signs to investigators, SHS administrators conducted an independent investigation without notifying the Department of Child and Families.

""On June 6, [SHS Principal Donna] Valentine had in her possession numerous emails from different sources that when read in their totality should have triggered a call to DCF. The call was not made,” Stamford police Sgt. Sean Scanlan said in the affidavit.

Stamford High Officials Plead Not Guilty To Charges In Teacher Affair Case

And one of the lawyers, Norm Pattis, who represents [Roth] Nordin, was blunt in his comments about the case outside the courtroom. “Really? This is how the state of Connecticut chooses to use its tax resources?” he said as Nordin stood by him in the lobby of state Superior Court in Stamford. "This is an unprecedented and quite frankly ridiculous prosecution.”

Mark Sherman, [Donna] Valentine’s lawyer, was more circumspect in his comments.

    ...

The educators’ lawyers entered not guilty pleas on their clients' behalf during the brief appearance in court.

I've only excerpted the key points. If it seems confusing or incomplete, please read the entire article at the article at the Stamford Advocate.

Angela Carella: Watkins arrest report raises questions

It's significant because the July 17 arrest of the teacher, Danielle Watkins of Norwalk, did not end there. On Oct. 2 Stamford police also arrested Stamford High Principal Donna Valentine and Assistant Principal Roth Nordin. Police allege that Valentine and Nordin had knowledge of a possible inappropriate relationship in January but, even though state law mandates that officials report suspicion of child abuse within 12 hours, they did not do so until June 23, after the school year ended.

    ...

The student's statement in the affidavit that Watkins had just told him she had been suspended jibes with what Superintendent Winifred Hamilton told The Advocate in July, after Watkins was arrested. Hamilton said Watkins was suspended near the end of the school year. It's unknown why school officials did not report the Watkins case to police and DCF when they suspended her.

    ...

But in the affidavit the group home counselor told police that, after the youth told him about Watkins, he reported it to his supervisor and personally called Hamilton. The counselor told police that Hamilton responded, "Oh, Jesus Christ, are you serious?" The counselor said in the statement that Hamilton told him to report it and that she would report it. Another group home supervisor told police that on June 23 he instructed a staff member to call DCF and that he reported it to the group home director.

    ...

If the sworn statements in the affidavit are true, school officials reported the Watkins case when the group home was about to report it. Police allege that school officials had reason to call them or DCF much earlier.

Stamford High Principal, Assistant Apply For Special Court Program

In a court appearance Tuesday, the lawyers for Stamford High School Principal Donna Valentine and Assistant Principal Roth Nordin said the administrators plan to apply to Connecticut's Accelerated Rehabilitation program, The Hour said. They are due back in court Nov. 17 when a judge will determine whether they are eligible for the program, The Hour said. If Valentine, 62, and Nordin, 55, complete the program, they could avoid prison time and the charges would be dismissed.

Arrested administrators, teacher not allowed to return to Stamford HS

There is a bit more clarity surrounding a school scandal, which the Stamford Superintendent of Public Schools says has resulted in the “erosion of public trust.” Monday afternoon, during a press briefing at Stamford Government Center, Superintendent of Schools, Dr. Winifred Hamilton, said two top administrators at Stamford High School, arrested in October for failure to report a sexual relationship between a male student and a female teacher, will not return to the high school. Principal Donna Valentine and Assistant Principal Roth Nordin, on paid leave since their arrests for failure to report, say they learned of the nine month ...

Stamford High report questions principal's leadership

Former Stamford High principal Donna Valentine lacked the confidence of staff, students and parents, and gave teachers the feeling that no one was in charge under her leadership, a report released Monday evening found. "Teachers, students and parents have limited involvement in meaningful and defined roles in decision making..." the report states. The evaluation of the school by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges was conducted over the course of more than a year, with the final piece of it done at the school just after Valentine and Assistant Principal Roth Nordin were arrested and charged in 2014 ...

Stamford High let teacher resign after incidents with female students

It began in May 2011, when a Stamford High School ninth-grader reported that her teacher touched her breast as she sat behind his desk during class. Then-Principal Donna Valentine investigated and concluded that the touching was not intentional. The teacher apologized and Valentine took no disciplinary action. Ten months later, the teacher was cited in another incident, The Advocate has learned from a disciplinary letter obtained by the paper. According to the March 26, 2012, letter written by the school district's former human resources director, the teacher was reprimanded that month, when he was discovered in his locked, darkened classroom ...

Report Blames 'Systemic Failures' In Stamford High Teacher Sex Case

A report obtained by the Stamford Advocate on the case of the student-teacher sexual relationship at Stamford High School showed the school's questionable decisions and its method of building its own case. A team of six members from Pullman & Comley, a Hartford law firm, took over the investigation of the incident because the Board of Education was unsure whether the superintendent of schools, Winifred Hamilton, would be able to look into her own office and conduct an impartial investigation, reported the Advocate. The report identifies "systemic failures" against the school and district with administrative turnover, inadequate training and a ...
