Weir arranged to meet the student at a local restaurant after contacting him through the instant messaging application on the social networking site, said Prosecutor Camelia M. Valdes. Weird was arrested in the restaurant parking lot.

The student became offended and brought the matter to the attention of school officials, who alerted the Bergen County Sheriff’s office, Del Russo said. From that point, the prosecutor said, “it became an undercover operation, with an investigator serving as a “foil” to continue the communication, he said. The prosecutor said Weir had arranged to meet the student at a local restaurant and offered the student $50 in exchange for sexual acts. Detectives arrested Weir in the restaurant parking lot.

    JOHN F. KENNEDY HIGH SCHOOL TEACHER ARRESTED FOR ATTEMPTED SEXUAL ASSAULT OF A CHILD

    PATERSON, NEW JERSEY: February 24, 2013

    Passaic County Prosecutor Camelia M. Valdes and Passaic County Sheriff Richard Berdnik announce the arrest of John F. Kennedy High School Teacher, Thomas Weir. The Paterson Board of Education has employed the 50-year-old Monticello, New York resident for approximately 21 years.

    Mr. Weir was taken into custody Saturday evening after an investigation by the Passaic County Prosecutor’s Special Victims Unit (SVU), the Passaic County Sheriff’s Internet Crimes against Children Unit (ICAC) and the Paterson Public Schools Department of School Security. He was charged with Attempted Sexual Assault, Attempted Endangering the Welfare of a Child, Luring/Enticing a Child, and Official Misconduct. Bail has not been set.

    Weir had arranged to meet a Kennedy High School student at a local restaurant. He offered the student $50 in exchange for sexual acts. Mr. Weir had contacted the student through the Facebook instant messaging application. Detectives arrested Weir in the restaurant parking lot.

    Attempted Sexual Assault has a maximum term of ten years in New Jersey State Prison, Endangering the Welfare of a Child has a maximum term of ten years in New Jersey State Prison, Luring and Enticing a Child has a maximum term of ten years in New Jersey State Prison, and Official Misconduct has a maximum term of ten years in New Jersey State Prison.
