More than half were never criminally charged. In all of those cases, information about the alleged misconduct isn’t easily accessible from the Texas Education Agency and in many instances is kept secret by school districts, allowing those teachers to move on to other teaching jobs or jobs involving contact with children. The American-Statesman reviewed the cases of 686 teachers who surrendered their teaching licenses or whose teaching licenses were revoked by the Texas Education Agency between ...

Data: Find Texas teachers accused of impropriety with a student

From January 2010 through December 2016, 686 teachers in Texas permanently lost their teaching licenses following allegations of impropriety with a student, according to data from the Texas Education Agency. The American-Statesman requested from the TEA the names of teachers who surrendered their teaching licenses or whose licenses were revoked after being investigated by the TEA for engaging in an improper relationship with a student. The newspaper then analyzed thousands of records included in government databases and media reports to determine the names of teachers who were charged and ran criminal background checks on those teachers through the Texas Department ...

A newspaper's review of records shows information about hundreds of teachers who have voluntarily surrendered their licenses after possible improper conduct with students but never were charged isn't readily made available to the public by the Texas Education Agency. The newspaper reported Sunday (http://atxne.ws/2kC7Dzd ) that in many cases, school districts keep the information secret and teachers are allowed to take other teaching jobs or positions where they are in contact with children. Texas Leads Nation in Teacher-Student Sexual Assaults, Reports Say

Almost 700 Texas teachers surrendered their license or had their license revoked since 2010 amid investigations for possible improper student relationships. That's according to the Austin American Statesman. The Statesman reviewed teacher records which showed more than half of those teachers were never criminally charged. The analysis found the state doesn't track whether a teacher has been charged or convicted of a crime, and that in many cases, school districts are keeping the information secret. Basic information, such as the alleged misconduct, where the alleged behavior happened and the age of the student, isn't readily available to the public from ...

Teachers not held accountable for improper conduct in Texas

A newspaper investigation has found the Texas Education Agency doesn’t track if a teacher has been charged or convicted of a crime. The Austin American-Statesman (https://atxne.ws/2jVclbz ) found that in many cases, school districts keep the information secret and teachers are allowed to take other teaching jobs or positions where they are in contact with children. “Some of those teachers are not prosecuted and worse . some are shuffled off to other schools to continue teaching in other areas, threatening other kids,” Gov. Greg Abbott told lawmakers in his State of the State address last week. “We are the ones ...

Removing predatory teachers starts with transparency, clear policies

Accusations of teachers having improper relationships with students have become more common. Yet, only a few of the hundreds of teachers in Texas accused of inappropriate behavior ever make headlines. When they do, it’s most likely those teachers will end up with a criminal record. Many others don’t. While there are no foreseeable changes to the inescapable world of social media that has facilitated inappropriate communication between teacher and student, there are plenty of solutions that can help curb such activity.
