Schäfer probing coloured teacher’s alleged fraud charge for identifying as African

Western Cape Education MEC Debbie Schäfer has urgently requested information of a coloured teacher allegedly facing a fraud charge by the Western Cape Education Department (WCED). TimesLive reported on Wednesday that Glen Snyman, a teacher at Grootkraal Primary School in Oudtshoorn, was summoned to a disciplinary hearing nearly three years after applying for a position at a school. Snyman claimed to be “African” in his CV, instead of his “official” coloured identity. Schäfer said: “I have learned only today of a WCED teacher who has allegedly been charged with ’fraud’ for classifying himself as ’African’ on his CV. “One of ...

Teacher charged over ‘African’ claims on CV picking up pieces of ’difficult journey’

An Oudtshoorn teacher accused of fraudulently representing the colour of his skin on his CV has been left to pick up the emotional pieces of his ordeal over which his livelihood was in jeopardy. Glen Snyman, a teacher at Grootkraal Primary School in the Karoo region, was charged with fraud after he, in 2017, allegedly identified himself as “African” on his CV for a position at another school, but had indicated “coloured” on other documents. Western Cape Education Department ( WCED) spokesperson Bronagh Hammond said that the department had been alerted to the discrepancy and Snyman was subsequently charged with ...

Fraud charges against a Western Cape teacher who classified himself as African on his CV have been dropped. Glen Snyman, a teacher at the Grootkraal Primary School in Oudtshoorn, was due to appear for a disciplinary hearing on Wednesday but just before attending the session the matter was withdrawn. Snyman is also the founder of an organisation called People Against Race Classification. In 2017, Snyman applied for the principal’s job at another school and claimed to be African and not coloured. Charges withdrawn against Cape teacher for identifying as 'African' in CV

The Western Cape Education Department (WCED) had to withdraw charges at a disciplinary hearing against a teacher who wrote “African” in his CV, instead of sticking with his “official” coloured identity. This after Education MEC Debbie Schäfer, activists and other politicians reacted angrily when news surfaced that Glen Snyman, a teacher at Grootkraal Primary School in Oudtshoorn had been summoned to a disciplinary hearing by the department yesterday. Snyman, an outspoken critic of race classification and founder of People Against Race Classification (Parc), allegedly identified himself as “African” when applying for the post of principal at another school in October ...

Mixed South African School Teacher Charged with Fraud After Identifying as ‘African’ on Job Application

A mixed-race South African teacher opposed to classifying people on the basis of race was charged with fraud and summoned to a disciplinary hearing after he claimed to be “African” on a job application in 2017. Glen Snyman, a former teacher at Grootkraal Primary School in the province of Western Cape, South Africa, was fired and charged with fraud after officials were alerted about discrepancies between previous documents and a three-year-old job application. Snyman, whom the BBC described as mixed race, fell into a racial category characterized as “colored” in South Africa. He claimed that he was African on a ...
