    SAPS crack down on ‘illegal schools’: Principals and foreigners arrested

    Gauteng education MEC Panyaza Lesufi joined the South African Police Service (SAPS) on Thursday 8 October as an arrest frenzy played out during an operation to clamp down on illegal schools in Ivory Park, outside Midrand. A heavily pregnant school principal was among the 16 people who were apprehended for failing to prove that they are legally permitted to reside and work in South Africa. Some 1 000 pupils in Johannesburg will be affected by the closure of schools that Lesufi said are not fit to operate.
