    To the Parents of:

    Center Point ISD Students
    Re: Employee Arrest

    Dear Parents:

Today the San Antonio Police Department notified Center Point ISD that Mr. Russell Berry, a Center Point ISD Elementary School teacher, was arrested and charged with Indecency With a Child, which is a Second Degree Felony.

Mr. Berry was placed on administrative leave effective November 1, 2018, immediately following an inquiry from a parent that school administrators recognized as suspicious behavior by Mr. Berry. Prior to his 2017 employment at Center Point ISD, Mr. Berry passed a Federal Bureau of Investigations criminal background check, which is part of our district’s hiring requirements. There were no other reports of potential misconduct or suspicious behavior prior to the inquiry we received on November 1.

As soon as Mr. Berry was placed on administrative leave, the District initiated an investigation with the assistance of Center Point ISD’s Chief of Police, Jimmy Poole. Chief Poole reported all of the facts to relevant authorities, including Child Protective Services and the Kerr County Sheriff’s Office. Working together, these agencies diligently advanced an investigation that led to Mr. Berry’s arrest.

If you have any questions or want to share any information related to Mr. Berry’s time in our schools, please contact my office, a campus administrator, or local law enforcement. You may also use the Crime Stoppers hotline at (830)896-8477 to anonymously make a report. Crime Stoppers and local law enforcement are valued partners of our District for protecting the safety and wellbeing of our students.

On November 6, the District hosted a meeting for the parents of current and former students of Mr. Berry, which included informational reports from the investigators and school officials. The purpose of this meeting was to inform parents of the details of the investigation and also to make available resources that include a forensic interview for any parents who wish to have their student evaluated.

I want to emphasize that the District encourages any questions or information. This incident is very troubling. Each and every day, the Center Point community and hundreds of families entrust our District with the care and education of their children. Each and every day, Center Point ISD teachers and staff members come to our schools, set an excellent example, and do the right things for our school District’s children.

    Sincerely,

    Cody Newcomb
    Superintendent
