    Former Santa Ana teacher charged with sex tourism

    In a federal indictment, authorities said that during a trip to the Philippines in March 2012, Ornelas, 63, had sex with an underage girl, videotaped their encounter and brought the images back to the United States.

    Relatives of Ornelas discovered the child pornography while searching a computer Ornelas owned after becoming suspicious that he was stealing Social Security and rental payments from his mother, the indictment said. Ornelas lived with the woman, who suffered from dementia. The relatives found what they believed to be “large amounts” of child pornography, many of which they suspected showed children 10 years old or younger. The relatives contacted authorities, telling them that Ornelas also had a history of “inappropriate” behavior with young girls.

    The indictment alleges that Ornelas either molested or sexually abused 10 girls, including a 4- or 5-year-old relative. However, he has only been charged in connection with one girl. In an interview with police investigators, authorities say Ornelas admitted fathering two children with two sisters in the Philippines. According to the indictment, he acknowledged the younger sister was 17 years old.    ​

    [Robert] Ornelas, according to federal prosecutors traveled in March 2012 to the Philippines, where he engaged in sexual conduct with a girl who was approximately 14. According to the affidavit in the case, Ornelas shot video of his encounter with the girl and returned to the U.S. with images. Ornelas had already been charged with lewd acts with another minor--a relative. Authorities believe there may be other victims.

    In the most recent case, federal prosecutors charged the former teacher based on information and images found on his computer and digital media seized by investigators when they executed a search warrant at his home. A forensic analysis of the computers and media led to the recovery of communications between Ornelas and several underage girls in the Philippines dating back to 2007, according to court records. Investigators found numerous sexually explicit photos and videos of underage girls.    ​

    Federal authorities have charged former school teacher and softball coach Robert Ruben Ornelas of engaging in sexual conduct in a foreign place, producing child pornography and possessing child pornography. Investigators claim he had gone to the Philippines in 2012 and videotaped himself having sex with a 14-year-old girl. He brought the tape back to the US. Ornelas had reportedly admitted to authorities that he fathered children to a pair of sisters, and said he knew that one of the girls was 17 years old.

    A former Santa Ana teacher with a history of inappropriate behavior with children was in federal custody Tuesday on suspicion of having traveled to the Philippines to have sex with a 14-year-old girl and videotaping the encounter. Robert Ruben Ornelas was taken into federal custody Friday, charged with engaging in sexual conduct in a foreign place, producing child pornography and possessing child pornography.

    Ornelas was already in custody in the Orange County Jail system after being arrested when local law enforcement discovered what they described as a trove of child pornography at his home. As a result of that arrest, he is already facing felony charges in Orange County Superior Court of lewd acts with a minor. The federal indictment alleges that Ornelas either molested or sexually abused 10 girls, including a 4- or 5-year-old relative. But he has only been charged in connection with one girl.    ​

    Southland teacher accused of traveling overseas for underage sex

    The United States Attorney's Office said Monday that 63-year-old Robert Ruben Ornelas is charged with engaging in sexual conduct in a foreign place, producing child pornography and possessing child pornography. The charges carry a maximum sentence of 80 years in federal prison. He was taken into custody Friday and ordered held without bond. The federal indictment says that after the trip to the Philippines in March 2012, Ornelas brought video images of the sexual encounter back to the United States.

    SANTA ANA, California – A former teacher with the Santa Ana School District has been charged with traveling to the Philippines to engage in sex with an underage girl and producing a video of the encounter.


    Robert Ruben Ornelas, 63, of Santa Ana, was taken into federal custody Friday afternoon after being named in a criminal complaint filed in United States District Court.


    The three-count complaint accuses the onetime school teacher and girl’s softball coach of engaging in sexual conduct in a foreign place, producing child pornography, and possessing child pornography.


    Ornelas also faces state charges of lewd acts with a child, but the defendant was turned over to federal custody on Friday after the new complaint was filed.


    The federal complaint details allegations that Ornelas traveled in March 2012 to the Philippines, where he engaged in sexual conduct with a girl who was approximately 14. According to the affidavit in the case, Ornelas took video of his encounter with the girl and brought the images with him when he returned the U.S. the following month. The third count in the complaint accuses the defendant of knowingly possessing the child pornography.


    While Ornelas is charged with conduct related to one victim, the affidavit discusses evidence linking him to the sexual molestation of additional victims.


    The federal case is based on information and images found on Orenelas’ computer and digital media seized by investigators when they executed a search warrant at his residence. On the seized media, investigators discovered communications between Ornelas and several underage girls in the Philippines dating back to 2007. Investigators also found numerous sexually explicit photos and videos of underage girls.


    The Orange County District Attorney’s Office previously charged Ornelas with two counts of lewd conduct with a child for allegedly molesting a relative. While those charges remain pending at this time, Ornelas was transferred to the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service Friday afternoon to facilitate the federal prosecution.


    At his initial court appearance Friday afternoon in federal court, Ornelas was ordered held without bond and was ordered to appear at an arraignment on November 10.


    A criminal complaint contains allegations that a defendant has committed a crime. Every defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty in court.


    The three charges in the criminal complaint carry a cumulative maximum sentence of 80 years in federal prison. The charge of producing child pornography carries a mandatory minimum sentence of 15 years.

    Former Santa Ana Coach, Teacher Arrested For Child Molestation

    Robert Ornelas, 62, of Santa Ana, was arrested Tuesday on two felony counts of lewd acts on a child after a months-long investigation. “A confidential informant came forward April of this year with some information and the subsequent investigation is what led up to the arrest,” Orange County Sheriff’s Lt. Mike Gavin told KNX1070. Ornelas is accused of sexually assaulting a female relative between 1990 and 1996, starting when she was 5 years old. “He is accused of molesting the victim while she was visiting his home including masturbation and oral copulation,” Farrah Emami of the OC District Attorney’s Office said.

    An investigation into the molestation allegations led the Orange County Child Exploitation Task Force, which includes the FBI, to carry out a search warrant Tuesday at Ornelas’ Santa Ana home, located in the 13000 block of Prospect Avenue. The task force discovered thousands of pornographic images, including both digital and hard copies, Laura Eimiller of the FBI said. Information related to the alleged sexual assault of the female relative was also found.


    “We feel like we have a real solid case for our first victim and just since last week, we’ve been able to identify two more victims,” Gavin said.    ​

    Former Santa Ana teacher arrested on suspicion of child molestation

    A former Orange County school teacher and softball coach has been arrested on suspicion of child molestation. On Tuesday, members of the Orange County Child Exploitation Task Force searched the residence of Robert Ruben Ornelas on the 13000 block of Prospect Avenue in Santa Ana. During the search, authorities found a large quantity of child pornography and evidence of child molestation. Ornelas, 62, was charged with sexually assaulting a female relative beginning when she was 5 years old. He is accused of molesting the girl between 1990 and 1996. The incidents allegedly happened while she was visiting his home, and included masturbation and oral copulation. According to the Orange County Sheriff's Department, a confidential informant tipped off authorities to Ornelas. Eyewitness News has learned that the informant is the suspect's brother, Ross Ornelas.​

    In interviews with all the Los Angeles television stations Thursday, Ross Ornelas outed himself as the one who turned his brother, Robert, in to authorities. Ross explained to Fox 11 News that he went to use his brother's computer and stumbled upon photos from the Philippines that revealed Robert had done more than buy property there. "[T]here were some lewd things in the computer," Ross told KABC Eyewitness News. "Eventually that's how I came about it." There were pictures of his brother with children from the Philippines, Ross explained. He told KTLA/Channel 5 these included "lewd" images of "little girls ... and little boys." "I didn't sleep for a couple nights, and I'm still shocked over it," he explained to KABC. So shocked at the time that he contacted the local FBI office, a move Ross does not regret. "If anybody has a member in their family, a friend, turn them in. Hell with them," Ross told KNBC/Channel 4. "They deserve justice."​
