A Chicago-area Catholic priest faces charges of sexual assault on a child, crimes that allegedly took place in Douglas County 10 years ago. Father Richard James Kurtz, 67, was charged with two felony counts of sexual assault and attempted sexual assault of a child after church officials notified the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office special victims unit about the reported incident.

Chicago Sun Times said:

The assault allegedly happened in Douglas County, south of Denver, in 2001, while Kurtz was working as a chemistry teacher at the University of Detroit High School in Detroit. Sheriff’s spokesman Sgt. Ron Hanavan said that Kurtz’s order notified the department in June about the alleged assault. He said Kurtz and the alleged male victim knew each another, but he couldn’t say where the victim was from or what they were doing in Colorado, because the case is sealed. He said there’s no connection with any Colorado church.

"In 2001, when a report first surfaced alleging misconduct by Father Kurtz, while he was visiting Colorado, a report was made by Fr. Kurtz Superior to civil authorities in the state of Michigan, where Fr. Kurtz was located at the time," it said. "Fr. Kurtz was removed from all public ministry very soon after the initial allegation was received, and for the several years that have elapsed since then, his activities and movements have been carefully restricted by the Chicago Province." the statement said.

The delay in charges might have been explained if the victim had chosen not to come forward immediately. However, that doesn't appear to have been what happened. According to Red Eye Chicago, the Society of Jesus Chicago-Detroit Province, at whose offices Kurtz was taken into custody this week, issued a statement claiming that an allegation of misconduct was shared with Michigan authorities that same year.

Members of a support group for victims of clergy misconduct rallied at Loyola's Lake Shore Campus following the recent arrest of a Jesuit priest in Chicago who allegedly sexually abused a child. The support group, the Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests (SNAP), suspected that the Rev. Richard James Kurtz was living at the Lake Shore Campus at the time of his Nov. 21 arrest by the FBI's Violent Crimes Task Force ... "The idea [of rallying outside Loyola] was to try to reach out to anyone that may have been hurt by his crimes or has any knowledge of what's going on, to encourage them to get help and go to the police," said Barbara Dorris, SNAP's outreach director.

Feds: Ex-Jesuit teacher videotaped boys in locker room

Two years after pleading guilty to molesting a student, a priest and former teacher at an all-boys Catholic high school in Detroit is facing new legal troubles — this time for allegedly videotaping hockey players while they were changing in a locker room. Richard James Kurtz, 69, a Jesuit priest and former chemistry teacher at the University of Detroit Jesuit High School, was charged in U.S. District Court Monday with producing, possessing and transporting child pornography. The charges stem from crimes he allegedly committed 15 years ago, during the 1998-99 hockey season at U-D Jesuit.

Jesuit Priest, Former Teacher Charged with Child Porn

Already on probation for child molestation, a Jesuit priest was charged in U.S. District Court Monday with child pornography offenses for allegedly videotaping hockey players in a changing room 15 years ago at the University of Detroit Jesuit High School, where he was a chemistry teacher. Richard James Kurtz, 69, was charged with producing, possessing and transporting child pornography, the Detroit Free Press, WXYZ-TV, WWJ/CBS and other metro Detroit media report. Kurtz allegedly made the videotapes during the 1998-99 hockey season. Combined, the charges are punishable by up to 60 years in prison.

Priest Arrested At Home For Wayward Clergy In Dittmer

The Rev. Richard Kurtz is accused of secretly recording hockey players in the locker room at University of Detroit Jesuit High School during the 1998-99 season. He was a teacher years ago at the all-boys school. A St. Louis federal judge refused to release Kurtz with an electronic monitor Wednesday. He was arrested Monday at a center for wayward clergy in Dittmer, Missouri.

A judge has refused to release a priest who is accused of secretly recording hockey players in the locker room at a Detroit school in the late 1990s ... Federal Judge Stephen Murphy III refused to grant bond to Kurtz on Thursday, saying he's a threat to the public.
