    ACLU Files Lawsuit in Arrest of Black Lives Matter Activist Zellie Thomas

    On January 11, 2019, a group of area residents convened in front of Paterson City Hall to protest the tragic death of Jameek Lowery. The series of events led to the arrest of local activist Zellie Thomas and Walter “Hank” Newsome, Bronx, a key ally and leading figure in efforts to bring attention, and change, to racial injustice. On Thursday, the New Jersey branch of American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) filed a lawsuit asserting that the free speech rights of the two Black Lives Matters members were violated during the incident.
