    ACLU sues Paterson over arrests of BLM leaders in 2019 Jameek Lowery protests

    The American Civil Liberties Union filed a lawsuit Thursday night claiming Paterson police violated the free speech rights of two Black Lives Matter activists by arresting them during a 2019 protest over the controversial death of Jameek Lowery. Zellie Thomas, the leader of Paterson Black Lives Matter group, and Walter “Hawk” Newsome Jr. from the Bronx were illegally arrested after marching in the street after a City Hall rally on Jan. 11, 2019 over Lowery’s police-custody death, the lawsuit said. “This action is brought by prominent Black Lives Matter activists who were arrested as they sought to protest police violence ...
