School officer faces discipline over student arrest

The wrongful arrest of a Smithton Middle School student will lead to disciplinary action against a Columbia police officer and has raised a call for the resignation of the school district’s equity officer. Kandas Holmes-Barnes’ daughter was arrested on suspicion of assault in January for a fight in the school hallway, which video evidence later showed she did not take part in. Holmes-Barnes filed a complaint with the Missouri Commission on Human Rights alleging racial discrimination, which was sent to the Columbia Police Department and sparked an internal affairs investigation.
