Online court records show Smith was charged with two misdemeanor counts of telephone harassment in 2008 in Jersey County, but prosecutors later dropped those cases.

Teacher charged in bomb threat at Calhoun High School

Calhoun County States Attorney Rick Ringhausen charged Michelle L. Smith, 36, of Jerseyville on Thursday with falsely making a terrorist threat. Smith has been held in the Jersey County jail since Tuesday after Monday’s incident. Bail has been set at $500,000.

The Calhoun County Sheriff’s Department was notified at approximately 1 p.m. Monday of a typed letter found inside the high school stating that there was a bomb in the building. The school was immediately evacuated and placed on lockdown.

The Illinois Secretary of State Bomb Squad, Secretary of State Capitol Police force, Illinois State Police, Illinois Department of Natural Resources and the Calhoun County Sheriff’s Department worked together to conduct a systematic search of the building, and the search yielded no bomb devices.

This is not the first time she's been in trouble:

According to online court documents, Smith was charged with harassment by telephone, a Class A Misdemeanor, twice between Dec. 31, 2007, and Jan. 28, 2008.

    Calhoun teacher held without bond

The Calhoun High School special education teacher accused of threatening to blow up her school is being held in jail without bond. U.S. Magistrate Judge Donald Wilkerson ordered Michelle L. Smith’s pretrial detention during her court appearance Monday in East St. Louis. Federal prosecutors have requested to have Smith jailed without bond pending any trial on a felony count of conveying a false threat, calling the Jerseyville woman a danger to the community and herself.

Citing her history of threatening behavior, prosecutors are also seeking competency testing of Smith, according to a report from The Associated Press. Wilkerson’s rulings on those matters were expected within days, the AP report said.
