    Djibril Coulibaly arrived in Louisiana 19 years ago, recruited from his native Mali by the state’s prize-winning program to promote the French language in schools. He and his wife settled in Opelousas, where their three sons were born. In 2012, they moved to Thibodaux, where he taught second and third graders and sometimes volunteered as a soccer coach.     Attorney: Louisiana French teacher to be released from jail

    Djibril Coulibaly who was arrested by ICE on December 15th is set to be released from jail tomorrow, according to his attorney Hiroko Kusuda. People in several parishes worked to stop the deportation of a Coulibaly who arrived in the state 19 years ago. He's from Mali, an African country situated southwest of Algeria. He and his wife lived in Opelousas, where their three children were born. A few years ago, they moved to Thibodaux, where he taught in Lafourche Parish schools.     50-year-old Djibril Coulibaly has worked and lived in Louisiana for over two decades, but for the past month, he’s been inside of an Immigrations Customs Enforcement detention center facing deportation.     On Thursday, French teacher Djibril Coulibaly, 50, walked quietly out of the Pine Prairie Correctional Center and into an SUV driven by his cousin, Bissy Coumare. Coulibaly grasped his cousin and other friends in joy and relief after he was buzzed through a security gate to freedom.     French teacher released after spending weeks in Pine Prairie ICE detention center

    “We are so grateful for everyone who spoke up for him. It’s more than exciting,” said Coumare, 65, who teaches French with his younger cousin at W.S. Lafargue Elementary School in Thibodaux and also taught with Coulibaly for years in their native Mali, where the two of them led trainings of U.S. Peace Corps volunteers together.
