Brownwood News (11 May 2012): Cross Plains Teacher Arrested For Improper Relationship with a Student

Brownwood News said:

46-year-old Kimberly O’Briant of Cross Plains, formerly of Lake Brownwood, was arrested for an improper relationship with a then 15-year-old male who was a student at Cross Plains High School, according to Brown County Sheriff’s Office Investigator Scott Bird. Bird said that interviews with the victim, other teachers, students and O’Briant determined that the relationship started through inappropriate texting. Because the investigation is still ongoing, no other details of the relationship were released. Bird stated that the investigation began after allegations of the relationship were made against O’Briant in late 2010 ... Because the warrant for O’Briant was issued during the time that the Operation Baker’s Dozen drug round up was being performed on Wednesday, O’Briant was included in the round up. Troopers with the Texas Department of Public Safety arrested O’Briant at her residence in Cross Plains.

Reporter News said:

A math teacher in the Cross Plains Independent School District has been indicted on charges alleging an improper relationship with a student, authorities said. Kimberly Ann O'Briant, 46, was served a warrant Wednesday on a charge of one count of improper relationship between an educator and student, a second-degree felony ... Bird said he could only say that the student was a juvenile, and that he could not disclose the boy's age. "I interviewed the juvenile and several teachers and other students," he said. "Through the investigation, we learned of improper texting messages and phone calls. A (Brown County) grand jury indicted Ms. O'Briant last week." He said O'Briant was placed on administrative leave — with pay — a "couple of months ago."
