Kerala school uniform row: Photographer who exposed ‘vulgar’ uniforms of girl students booked under POCSO

The controversy over a school uniform in Kerala takes a new turn after the photographer has been booked under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. The school in question is St. Alphonsa Public School, Aruvithura, Kottayam that has been news for its ‘vulgar’ dress code for its girl students. The matter first came to light when a person named Zachariah Pookunnam posted the photos of the female students on Facebook and raised objections against the indecent school dress. The uniform became a matter of debate on the social media as it was seen as sexual objectification of minor girls. Girl’s uniform in Kerala school termed ‘vulgur’, case filed.

A few days ago, Zachariah took to Facebook to raise his voice against ‘inappropriate’ school uniform. He had received the photo from a friend in Erattupetta in Kottayam. He deemed it an embarrassing situation for the female students to wear such a ‘vulgar’ dress. The Facebook post quickly went viral with netizens questioning the morals of the school authorities. With social media burning and seeking an answer to the reason behind the implementation of such a ‘questionable’ dress code, the school has rebuffed allegations. The Principal had said the image seen in the post has been photoshopped and nowhere close to the original uniform of the school.

And now the owner of the picture, the photographer named Bose Eapen is facing the ire of angry school management for exposing the matter. They have filed a case against Eapen for taking pictures of the girl in objectionable school dress. The Erattupetta police have charged the guy under Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. Eapen who has applied for anticipatory bail was quoted by India Today saying, “”This is just a baseless allegation against me and I see this as an attack against individual’s right to speak. The situation has gone really worse as I cannot even face my relatives or friends.”
