California migrant detention center called out for ‘years of abuse and misconduct’

The American Civil Liberties Union has come out with a report that is critical of the Otay Mesa Detention Center, which houses hundreds of detainees, mostly immigrants awaiting trial, sent here by Immigration and Customs Enforcement. According to the report, the ACLU found systematic problems at the facility, and it’s calling for an “end to oppressive, unnecessary, and inhumane systems of incarceration – especially facilities run by private, for-profit corporations.” “It’s a compilation of reports that have emerged over the years of abuse and misconduct at the Otay Mesa Detention Center,” said Monika Langarica, an attorney with the ACLU. “It ...
