Collinsville woman charged with stealing from Summit Elementary School PTA

The administration of the school contacted police on Sept. 23 and provided documentation related to a possible theft. After investigation, the Collinsville Police identified Heather Horvath, 38, as the suspect, police said. Horvath faces a felony charge of theft more than $500.

PTA president in Collinsville charged with felony theft

Collinsville Police Major Richard Wittenauer said the department was contacted by the administration of Summit Elementary school after it discovered that funds were missing from a PTA account. The school was tipped off at the beginning of the year, Wittenauer said, when Horvath, who held a paid position at Summit, didn't show up. The administration found out that the state had revoked the PTA's nonprofit status for bookkeeping failures and discovered that one of the organization's accounts held only $18. A bank had closed a separate account, Wittenauer said, after noticing "that a lot of the transactions were being done at casinos, restaurants and bars."

Collinsville PTA president charged with stealing money, using at casino

According to police in Collinsville, the investigation is focused on Summit Elementary School where $2,500 was taken out of two PTA bank accounts. Administrators gave police documents indicating that the money was missing. Investigators said the money was spent using a debit card in what was considered suspicious locations. “The money was spent in bars and casinos,” said Officer Richard Witenauer, “and considering the organization has tax exempt status, a bank office saw this and shut it down because it looked suspicious.” Police said the suspect is Heather Horvath, 38, who is the president of the PTA. She was charged earlier this week with three felony counts of stealing.
