    Gloria Romero: 'Teacher jails' a product of ineffective laws
    Due to the complicated laws making it extraordinarily expensive and virtually impossible to terminate teachers for acts of misconduct or even ineffectiveness, school districts have established “teacher jails” – where the accused go to await their disciplinary outcomes. The problem is, these teacher jails too often function as holding cells, where the accused can sometimes be whisked away with very little due process. Some claim they have never even been “officially” charged. All seem to be bunched together – irrespective of the accusation (e.g., child molesters with ineffective teachers). Incarcerating a teacher in one of these jails is costly: teachers must be housed, sometimes for as long as five years; replacement teachers must be paid; termination proceedings can run hundreds of thousands of taxpayer dollars, and oftentimes, districts just give up and pay the accused teacher to resign.
