George Floyd death: Canadian man arrested after turning up to protest wearing blackface

A man who turned up to a protest wearing blackface in Canada at the weekend has been arrested, police confirmed. The man was arrested at a Black Lives Matter protest in Toronto on Saturday (local time). Videos of the man were later shared online which sparked outrage as demonstrations over the death of George Floyd, a black man killed by a white police officer in the US, continued throughout the world. In one video, the man is asked by a reporter, "What are you doing here?" While others can be heard shouting, "You've got to go". Before things escalate further, ...

Churchill: A proud day for Troy, but what about Green Island?

So Troy pulled it off. The region's largest protest in the wake of George Floyd's death was, by most every account, a remarkable and proud day for the city. But Troy police handled Sunday's protest with dignity and grace. And steps taken by City Hall, including Madden's public support of the protest, seem to ...

Protesters Say They Were Assaulted Before Arrest, Feared COVID-19 In Jail

They call themselves the J-5. That’s the cell most of them were held in at Louisville Metro Department of Corrections, and it’s where most of them met after being arrested for participating in protests on Sunday, May 31. “They put us in there to stop our spirits,” 24-year-old protester Markice Armstrong said. But that’s not how it worked out. In Louisville’s Central Park this weekend, about a dozen men and women who were arrested and locked up together gathered again. Though most had just met, they had the ease of longtime friends. Since their release they’ve stayed in touch through ...

California Teacher Goes Viral After Threatening to Kill Protester in Front of Crying 8-Year-Old Daughter

The Bakersfield City School District is investigating Carrie Maxwell, a second-grade teacher at Wayside Elementary School caught threatening to kill a crying 8-year-old and her mother in a now-viral video following a racial justice protest last Friday. In the video, a woman named Erika Baze took her daughter to the protests which had been peaceful thus far for Danyelle. While walking, Baze claimed that Maxwell "jumped out" in front of her in a muumuu and began yelling at the mother and child, both of whom are white. "Do not film my daughter!" Baze yelled as Maxwell began filming the interaction ...

Top City Officials Signed Off on Use of Tear Gas During Protests

The revelation that Mayor Jim Kenney, Police Commissioner Danielle Outlaw and a small number of Philadelphia's top-ranking officials signed off on the use of tear gas during the mass protests last week came out during a City Council hearing Wednesday. The controversial decision was made by a group called "Unified Command" that included the mayor, police commissioner, Fire Commissioner Adam Thiel and several other high-ranking members of Kenney's administration, according to Managing Director Brian Abernathy during an exchange with City Councilwoman Helen Gym. Abernathy was also a member of the Unified Command group, he said. The group formed Saturday, May ...
