    Districts look for warning signs of bad teachers

    Sean Diestel had been teaching in Columbia Public Schools for three years before his arrest last month on allegations of having a sexual relationship with a student. Austin Miller, a teacher at the district’s alternative high school, had worked full-time at Douglass since 2012 when he was arrested on suspicion of taking photos of someone else in the Ellis Library bathroom in April. In each case, the men passed background checks and worked for years apparently without warning signs of illegal sexual behavior.
