Disabled girl who said she was punished for reporting school gang rape wins nearly $1 million settlement The city paid nearly one million dollars to settle a lawsuit brought by the family of an intellectually disabled teenager who said she was gang raped in her Brooklyn school’s stairwell — and then punished by school brass for reporting the attack. The victim, who wants to remain anonymous, has an IQ of 71 and possessed a perfect disciplinary record when she was forced into a stairwell at the troubled Teacher Preparatory High and forced to perform sex acts on a group of boys, according to the suit. But instead of punishing her attackers, the suit says officials at the Brownsville school suspended the 15-year-old for engaging in sexual activity on campus. That happened despite the fact that one of her alleged assailants was later arrested, according to Brooklyn attorney Carrie Goldberg, who litigated the case. “After a brutal rape that was witnessed by other students, her school bent over backwards to redefine her assault as a consensual act that violated its conduct policy and suspended her,” Goldberg said. “Little care and concern was given to her recovery.” The city forked over $950,000 to settle the student’s suit ...
