    Sarasota teacher accused of DUI

    A Sarasota County first-grade teacher faces several charges, including driving under the influence, after an Aug. 12 accident, according to the Sarasota County Sheriff's Office. Deborah Smith, 43, was charged with four misdemeanors — leaving the scene of an accident with property damage, driving while under the influence, driving while under the influence with property damage and resisting arrest without violence, according to a probable cause affidavit from the Sheriff's Office.

    Teacher charged in auto accident

    According to the affidavit, Smith was passing a car driven by Timothy Macksey just before 8 p.m. when she sideswiped his vehicle near the 2000 block of Olentary Street, south of Bee Ridge Road and Tamiami Trail.

    Smith stopped briefly and showed Macksey her information, but became angry when he contacted law enforcement, the affidavit said. She drove away and turned onto South School Avenue when a deputy noticed that her car matched the description and pulled her over, the report said.

    The deputy noticed Smith's eyes looked bloodshot and smelled "an obvious odor of an alcoholic beverage" when she spoke. She refused to take a breath test, the deputy reported.

    After she was arrested and taken to the North County Jail, she reportedly tried to walk away from the deputy but he grabbed her arm to stop her. She pulled free, and the deputy dropped his laptop on the ground in the process. He then used both hands to escort her to the jail entrance, where two corrections officers were waiting.
