Jefferson High School teacher David Anthony Rangel, 28, was arrested Tuesday morning at the Greeley Police Department and booked into Weld County Jail on suspicion of sexual assault on child by a person in a position of trust, police spokesman Sgt. Joe Tymkowych said in a news release.Police learned Thursday that the female student had been improperly touched by a teacher, Tymkowych said. The police investigation determined that at the beginning of the school year, Rangel had "consensual contact" with the girl in a classroom, Tymkowych said. Weld County District Attorney's Office Press Release (Sept 22 2010): BOND AND COURT DATE SET FOR GREELEY TEACHER GREELEY, Colo. – David Rangel (DOB 5/5/82) of Greeley appeared in Weld County District Court this afternoon for a bond hearing following his arrest yesterday by the Greeley Police Department. Bond was set for Rangel at $100,000 Cash/Surety/Property. Rangel was arrested following an investigation into allegations that he sexually assaulted a 16-year-old student during the beginning of this school year. The Weld County District Attorney’s Office has formally filed one felony count against Rangel: Sexual Assault on a Child by a Person in a Position of Trust, a class four felony. According to police reports, the foster mother of the victim reported a sex offense to the Greeley Police Department on September 16, 2010. Officers then began investigating allegations that Rangel, a teacher at Greeley’s Jefferson High School, engaged in conversations throughout the summer with the victim that were sexual in content and that he subjected her to sexual contact earlier this school year in his classroom. If Rangel does not post bond, he is scheduled to appear in court on Friday, September 24, 2010 at 8:30 a.m. for a Hearing on Advisement. If Rangel does post bond before Friday, he is schedule to appear in court for a Hearing on Advisement on October 12, 2010, at 9:00. Rangel’s case will be heard in Division 11.
Denver Westword Blog: David Rangel: $100,000 bond for teacher who says he didn't boink student but wanted to (Sept 23 2010) David Rangel, the third area teacher busted for alleged improper relations with students in four months, appeared in Weld County District Court yesterday, where bond was set at a whopping $100,000. That's a big number for a guy who told police that while he kissed and groped a teenage student, he didn't have sex with her. ... Shortly thereafter, a GPD officer spoke with Rangel, who initially denied that he'd done anything inappropriate. But the student told the officer that although there'd been no intercourse, they had kissed -- something Rangel later confirmed after saying "he was sorry for not being completely honest," the affidavit says. Rangel said the kiss lasted ten to fifteen seconds and included over-the-shirt breast caressing, but he claimed he wasn't "aroused" because he knew what he was doing was wrong. He conceded, though, that he and the student engaged in subsequent conversations about having sex with each other. Not quite, the student maintained in another interview ... David Rangel, 29, a former teacher at Jefferson High School in Greeley, held his head in his hand throughout his 40-minute sentencing hearing Thursday in which Weld District Court Judge Julie Hoskins sentenced him to 10 years to life on sex offender intensive supervision probation, plus an additional six months in the Weld County Jail on work release. ... One of the girls addressed the court, stating she felt more victimized by the investigation than by Rangel, whom she described as an asset to her school. She and Rangel apparently had sexually explicit conversations. "Most people in my life believe David ruined me," said the girl, who will not be named because she is a minor and victim in the case. "I never felt like a victim. ... Had there never been an investigation, I could still be living happily in Greeley. Instead of being a victim of sex assault, I consider myself a victim of bullying from my peers." She explained that once her peers learned of the charges, they labeled her a snitch and created a hostile environment for her " so much so that she quit school. ... A second 16-year-old girl came forward after the first report, stating Rangel assaulted her in a classroom in 2009 at Trademark High School. She did not attend the sentencing hearing.

He was arrested in September 2010 after admitting to police that he had a relationship with a 16-year-old student and that he had fondled her in his classroom. He was sentenced in February 2011 to 10 years to life on Sex Offender Intensive Supervised Probation and remains in the Greeley area.
