Jury selection to begin for man accused of slaying girl, 10

A defense attorney for a middle school football coach accused of abducting, raping and killing a 10-year-old Missouri girl conceded that his client committed the crimes Monday but contended that the man did not deliberate first, as prosecutors say. Although Craig Wood has pleaded not guilty to charges including first-degree murder, his attorney, Patrick Berrigan, agreed with the basic facts outlined by Greene County Prosecutor Dan Patterson in opening statements at Wood’s trial, The Springfield News-Leader reported. But Berrigan argued that Wood — who faces the death penalty if he’s convicted — acted impulsively when he snatched Hailey Owens in ...

Jury selection to begin for man accused of slaying girl, 10

A defense attorney doesn’t dispute that a middle-school football coach abducted a 10-year-old Missouri girl in broad daylight in front of witnesses, then raped and killed her. At issue is whether substitute teacher Craig Wood deliberated before snatching Hailey Owens, as prosecutors argued Monday during opening statements, or whether it was impulsive, as the defense argues. The Springfield News-Leader reports that Wood’s attorney, Patrick Berrigan, blamed long-suppressed urges and methamphetamine. Charges against Wood include first-degree murder. Neighbors unsuccessfully attempted to rescue Hailey in February 2014, chasing after the suspect and recording his license plate. The prosecution described Wood going to ...
