    Overturned attempted murder conviction could change police interrogation tactics

    A New Jersey appeals court on Monday tossed the attempted murder conviction of a Monmouth County man, ruling that statements he gave to police should not have been allowed at his 2017 trial. Anthony Sims Jr., 32, of Long Branch, is serving 50 years in Trenton State Prison for allegedly shooting another man 12 times in Red Bank on April 9, 2014. In a ruling that is likely to change the way police interrogate criminal suspects, the three-judge panel found that detectives lied to Sims about why they wanted to question him: for an assault rather than the actual charge ...
