Colorado school resource officers handcuffed, jailed 11-year-old with autism for scratching classmate, lawsuit says

Douglas County school resource officers handcuffed an 11-year-old boy with autism, grabbed him by the back of the neck, left him for two hours in a patrol car — where he banged his head repeatedly against plexiglass — and then booked him into a juvenile jail for scratching a classmate with a pencil, according to a lawsuit filed Tuesday. The school district was also accused of failing to prepare staff for working with disabled ...

An 11-year-old with autism was arrested for scratching a classmate with a pencil, lawsuit says

As an 11-year-old boy with autism was sitting quietly after scratching a classmate with a pencil, sheriff’s deputies in Douglas County, Colo., pledged to the boy that they had no plans of harming the middle-school student. “I’m not going to hurt you,” one of the officers said to the boy in August 2019, according to body-cam video released this week. But not even 30 seconds passed before the officers aggressively handcuffed the boy, who shrieked out in pain as he was being detained against his will, according to a federal lawsuit filed this week. From there, the sheriff’s deputies, who ...
