A 44-year-old Goldendale High School teaching assistant accused of having sexual contact with a 16-year-old sophomore boy has been fired. Cheri Powers has been charged with first-degree sexual misconduct with a minor. She made a preliminary appearance in Klickitat County Superior Court on Friday, at which time she was released from custody and ordered not to have any contact with the boy. Her arraignment is set for Monday. She was fired Thursday, one week after school officials learned of the allegations and had the district's insurance company investigate, said Superintendent Mark Heid. "What we got out of our investigation is that there was some inappropriate contact -- how much we don't know yet -- but it was enough for us to act on," he said in a Monday telephone interview ... A parent alerted school officials to the allegations, Heid said. According to the allegations, contact between Powers and the student began late last fall and ended in late February, he said.

Cheri Powers, 44, is the employee at the center of these allegations. She's suspected of having some sort of sexual relationship with a 16-year-old, Goldendale High School boy. The Goldendale School District fired a teacher who is accused of an inappropriate sexual relationship with a student. Cheri Powers was a part-time teacher and an assistant coach for track and cross-country. Mark Heid with the Goldendale School District says he fired Powers on Thursday after turning the investigation over to police. Police arrested Powers on Friday, April 27. The school district says Powers was a special-needs teacher, but the victim was not one of Powers' students.

Goldendale Sentinel (2 May 2012): School worker fired, arrested on sex charges

A Goldendale School District (GSD) employee was fired Thursday, April 26 after allegations surfaced about her alleged sexual involvement with a student. Cheri Powers of Goldendale, 44, was arrested by Goldendale Police Department last week and was subsequently charged with sexual misconduct in the first degree. According to GSD Superintendent Mark Heid, “A community member reported to the GSD that a high school paraeducator may be having inappropriate interactions with a high school student.” Heid says that when he learned of the allegations, April 16, the district immediately contacted Canfield Insurance Group, the district’s insurance provider, to begin an investigation. Powers’s position was terminated after the investigation was complete, and Heid informed Goldendale Police Department (GPD) of their findings. According to court documents, the victim, a 16-year-old student at Goldendale High School gave detailed information about the incident to GPD Lieutenant Reggie Bartkowski in an interview.

Goldendale Sentinel: School board takes no action in response to union in Powers case (Aug 1 2012)

Goldendale School Board met in a closed meeting on Thursday to discuss a complaint made by the union representing Goldendale school employees in the case of termination of employment of Cheri Powers ... Following nearly an hour of closed-door discussion, [Superintendent Mark] Heid emerged to say that no action will be taken by the Board. “I feel we did [follow the process] and they say we didn’t,” said Heid. The school terminated Powers’ employment on April 26 following her arrest for sexual misconduct in regards to alleged sexual involvement with a GHS student. The case has not gone to trial.

GOLDENDALE, WA (KPTV) -
A former Goldendale teacher accused of having an inappropriate relationship with a student pleaded guilty in court Tuesday.
Cheri Powers pleaded guilty to the charge of sexual misconduct with a minor. She was sentenced to 364 days in jail, however, 329 days were suspended and 30 days were converted to work crew detail.
