Teacher charged with public intoxication during class

The Marshall County Sheriff's Office arrested Bryant Wednesday afternoon after the Marshalltown School District received a tip from a staff member that an employee may be under the influence of alcohol. Chief Deputy Steve Hoffman said the incident happened the same day a county deputy was at the school for DARE anti-drug and alcohol classes. “The irony is not lost,” said Hoffman.

Sobriety tests were administered and she was charged with public intoxication. Authorities said [Carissa] Bryant had blood shot eyes, slurred speech, and a blood alcohol concentration of 0.19 percent.​

Marshalltown Teacher Accused of Teaching While Drunk

Thirty-three-year-old Carissa Bryant is charged with public intoxication after being taken into custody at Linahen Intermediate School. Police say they were called to the school after receiving a report that Bryant was intoxicated. They say she failed field sobriety tests and after she was taken to the Marshall County Jail her blood alcohol content was measured at .19 percent.​

The Marshall County Sheriff's Office says 33-year-old Carissa Bryant, of Marshalltown, was arrested Wednesday and charged with public intoxication. Police say they responded to a report from Marshalltown Community School District of a possible intoxicated teacher at Leninhan Intermediate School. The Marshalltown Times-Republican reports testing at Marshall County Jail showed Bryant had a blood alcohol concentration of 0.19, more than double the legal limit.

Last week, Kimi Banderas, says her daughter told her [Carissa] Bryant passed out at the school and was taken away by ambulance. Her daughter claims the teacher often slurs her words and has trouble walking straight. Based on what her daughter told her, Banderas believes it was alcohol induced. “She came home and told me about it. She’s like, mom she smelled funny and the stuff that was in her cup smelled funny,” Banderas said.​
