Paterakis Arrested, Zielger Threatens To Eject Everyone At School Board Meeting

Brevard County School Board candidate Dean Paterakis was arrested at Tuesday's School Board meeting after the School Board Chairman, Andy Ziegler, cut Paterakis' speaking time short upon hearing Paterakis utter the words "erect penis." The controversial agenda item that drew a large audience and heated debate was a proposal to schedule a hearing in July on implementing a non-discrimination policy for transgender students. Before the public speakers began, Ziegler laid down some ground rules on civility. "Please be reminded that profane, abusive, or slanderous speech is not permitted. To clarify, we consider this Board Room an extension of the school ...

Candidate arrested, carried out of Brevard school board meeting after saying ‘penis'

Brevard County School Board members expected heated comments from the public Tuesday, but one speaker apparently took it too far and was arrested and carried out in the middle of his comments. Board Chairman Andy Ziegler repeatedly warned the crowd that “profane, abusive or slanderous speech” would not be allowed. “We consider this board room an extension of the school environment, and therefore, if it’s not appropriate conversation in a school, we don’t consider it appropriate conversation here,” he said. The meeting was packed for a discussion of a proposed change to the district’s nondiscrimination policy that would add protections ...

WATCH: Florida school board candidate carried out of LGBT meeting after insane ’erect penis’ rant

A Florida parent was arrested Tuesday night after steering a school board meeting off the rails during a discussion of a restroom policy for transgender students. Dean Paterakis, who’s running for Brevard County School Board, was carried out of the meeting by four deputies after saying the words “erect penis” after officials opened the discussion up to the public, reported Florida Today. The school board chairman warned attendees not to engage in “profane, abusive or slanderous speech” before turning the microphone over to the public, but the official said Paterakis quickly violated the first rule. “The reason why I am ...

    Teacher arrested during LGBT-policy debate

A school board candidate in Brevard County, Florida, was hauled away by police during a Tuesday meeting dealing with LGBT issues when he refused to cede his allotted speaking time. Dean Paterakis was asked by Brevard School Board chairman Andy Ziegler to vacate the speaker’s podium for making so-called “inappropriate” remarks. “That’s what happened…we have a teacher who put his phone up on the big screen and showed, what students say, was his erect penis,” Paterakis said.

Anti-Trans School Board Candidate Arrested for Refusing to Leave LGBT Meeting – VIDEO

A Florida school board candidate was arrested earlier this week after he he refused to leave a meeting at which he spoke against anti-LGBT discrimination measures in the district. At a Brevard County School Board public meeting on Tuesday, Dean Paterakis alleged that a local teacher had shown a photo of his “erect penis” to students. School board chair Andy Ziegler said the comments were inappropriate but Paterakis refused to leave the podium. A security officer and two sheriff’s deputies intervened but Paterakis refused to budge, saying he had a right to “free speech.” Some audience members voiced support for ...

School board candidate's arrest not free speech issue

A recent FLORIDA TODAY editorial implied that the arrest of a school board candidate at the May 24 school board meeting violated the candidate’s right to free speech. I disagree. Dean Paterakis signed up to speak about board business, as is the right of all citizens. While it is true he was speaking freely shortly before his arrest, it is important to realize that he was not arrested for his speech. He was arrested for preventing the board meeting from continuing after his speech was stopped. He stood defiantly in front of the crowd and announced he was not leaving ...
