    Bio
Bret Helvig was born and raised in Kokomo, Indiana. After graduating from high school, he moved to Honolulu, Hawaii to attend the University of Hawaii at Manoa. At UHM, Bret received his B.A. “with distinction” in French and Spanish and went on to earn separate M.A. degrees in both languages. Working as a graduate assistant while pursuing his advanced degrees, Bret discovered his interest in the teaching profession. Prior to coming to The Bishop’s School in 2008, Bret spent one year teaching French III at Punahou School and eight years teaching all levels of Spanish at `Iolani School.

Bret loves learning languages. In addition to French and Spanish, he speaks Portuguese. It is no surprise then that Bret likes to travel whenever he has the time. While at the University of Hawaii at Manoa, he spent semesters abroad in Paris, France and Seville, Spain. This experience gave him the opportunity to visit other European countries and to develop an interest in learning about other cultures and people. Bret also spent a summer teaching Spanish to American university students at the Instituto Tecnológico y de Estudios Superiores de Monterrey in Querétaro, Mexico. He has visited various parts of Brazil and, most recently, Costa Rica.
Bret hopes that his enthusiasm for language learning will be contagious among his students at The Bishop’s School.
