The charges stem from an incident that happened on June 3rd where police say Merrit showed up at the students house intoxicated. E-Paris Extra: Teacher’s aide at Paris alternative school alleged to have had sex with student (Aug 13 2013) Bethea Burchett Williams Merritt, 40, who worked at the Paris alternative school, was arrested on Friday after a grand jury issued a sealed indictment alleging she showed up drunk at a student’s house and had sex with a student. The arrest warrant was based upon a complaint in early June alleging improper relations between an educator and a student – a second-degree felony complaint filed in Sixth State District Court. The 5-foot-9, 129-pound Merritt was booked into the Lamar County Jail at 4:20 p.m. on Friday and was released 14 minutes later after making the $15,000 bond.

Merritt is accused of showing up at a students home, in May, intoxicated. Other allegations accuse Merritt of also having sexual relations with a student.

Bethea Merritt was put on leave during investigation and has since been terminated, according to Paris ISD superintendent Paul Jones.
GUILTY March 28, 2014 A former Paris Independent School District teacher’s assistant entered a guilty plea today to a felony charge of improper relationship between educator and student, according to court documents. Lamar County Court-at-Law Judge Bill Harris gave Bethea Merritt, 41 of Paris, four years probation and adjudicated the sentence. If she completes probation successfully her record will not reflect a conviction.
