"The investigation found that Appleton had sexual relations with at least one victim at her residence while providing the victim(s) with alcohol and marijuana," a news release from Shelbyville Police Department said. "The investigation showed at certain times Appleton would drink and smoke marijuana with the victim(s)." Appleton was booked into the Shelby County Jail. She entered a not guilty plea in the initial hearing and was given $20,000 bond. WSXV: SCS teacher hired at middle school in '08 arrested on sex and drug charges (Aug 8 2012) The following is information supplied by Appleton on the Shelbyville Middle School website: Originally from Trafalgar, Indiana and graduated from Indian Creek High School in 2002, where she was involved in student council, 4-H, band, and a church youth group. Appleton attended Hanover College where she was a member of the ISEA (Indiana Student Educator's Association), managed the football team, and worked in the school's athletic center. She graduated in May of 2006 with a degree in Sociology and after completing student teaching at Winchester Village Elementary in the Fall of 2006, received a degree in Elementary Education in December of 2006. Appleton worked at Webb Elementary as a kindergarten teacher and as a second grade assistant in the Winter/Spring of 2007. During the school year of 2007/2008, she was a special education assistant at Indian Creek Middle/High School. She was hired as a Mild Disabilities teacher to teach at Shelbyville Middle School two days before school started in the fall of 2008. She was working on her Master's degree through Indiana Wesleyan. Three members of Appleton's family teach at Indian Creek schools.

Examiner: Trial began with jury selection on Monday, followed by testimony from 10 former students of Appleton stating that she allowed them to smoke marijuana and have alcohol at her home. According to the Shelbyville News, nearly all of the 10 witnesses brought forth by the prosecutor reported partying at the teacher’s home, but each of them had different stories when first interviewed by the police. They left out smoking and drinking at the time, allegedly, because they did not want to get into trouble with their parents. After investigators told the teens they would get in trouble for lying, the teens changed their stories. The witnesses were not consistent in their stories on the stand, and only one witness of the 10 said they were smoking the marijuana or saw it happen said they knew it was Appleton who provided the drugs. Defense attorney Bryan Barrett poked holes in the testimony of the witness who said he had a year-long sexual relationship with Appleton. The witness had several inconsistencies from the initial report to the police, what was said during investigations, and what was said on the stand.
