Former Danvers St. John's Prep teachers accused of abuse by religious order

A Baltimore, Md., based Catholic religious order that sponsors schools across the U.S., including St. John Prep in Danvers, has released a list of dozens of members accused of sexually abusing children. The list released Friday, Feb. 12, by the Xaverian Brothers includes two current members “with a credible or established offense.” The group, a separate entity not part of the Archdiocese of Baltimore or Boston, says no credibly accused brothers are in active ministry. “As religious, the Xaverian Brothers are deeply sorry for the pain caused by the crime of sexual abuse of minors committed by any Xaverian Brother,” ...

One of the living former Xaverian Brothers listed with a credible or established offense against a minor, according to the organization, is Thomas Morrissey, known as Brother Gabriel, who faces allegations of abuse and attempted abuse reported in 2002 and later at both Danvers and Westwood. Morrissey’s alleged abuse took place from the late 1960′s to early 1970′s. He was placed on a safety plan in 2002 from 2012, limiting him to “living in a restricted environment on a safety plan,” which included no contact with minors and supervised office work. He was assigned to St. John’s Prep from 1965 ...

According to the statement from St. John’s Prep, 11 of the listed names were associated with the school between 1922 and 1978. These individuals included: Francis E. Dailey, William Burns, John Sullivan, Joseph Thibault, Albert Kerressey, Thomas Harrison, Thomas Holihan, George Gardiner, Eward Powers, Francis Dolan, and Leroy Lamont. Of those names, all are deceased except for Gardiner, who is listed as a former member. “St. John’s holds those in positions of trust at the school to the highest possible standards,” said St. John’s Prep Headmaster Edward Hardiman in the statement. “We remain committed to transparency and to providing a ...

St. John’s statement also notes allegations against two brothers unlisted by the Xaverian Brothers, George Donnelly and Robert Flaherty. George Donnelly served at St. Johns from 1984 until his resignation in 2003. According to the statement, St. John’s received an allegation of conduct violating professional boundaries involving Donnelly in 2003 regarding an incident in 1993. St. John’s said they reported the allegation to law enforcement and church officials at the time. Donnelly was not charged with a crime.

Robert Flaherty taught at the school from 1999 to 2007 and from 2010 to 2018. He was placed on leave from the school and removed from the ministry after allegations of abuse from the mid-1980s surfaced during an investigation by the Baltimore Police Department and the Baltimore City State’s Attorney Office. None of the alleged abuse involved the St. John’s Prep community. The investigation is still ongoing. “As a school community, we humbly acknowledge the pain this information may cause for victims of abuse as well as for the larger Prep community as we continue to grapple with feelings of ...

12 with ties to St. John's Prep on sex abuse list
