Teacher charged with sexually assaulting three of her 15-year-old students

Nicole Dufault, a 34-year-old female language arts teacher at Columbia High School in Maplewood, New Jersey, was charged on Sept. 18 after officials accused her of sexually molesting three of her teenage male students. Dufault, a resident of Caldwell, was arrested at her home on Wednesday, according to WPIX in Newark.


Allegedly, Dufault had “oral and vaginal sex with the students on school property and in her car on multiple occasions.” The three students the teacher is accused of sexually assaulting are all 15-year-old students at Columbia High School. UPDATE: Teacher, Caldwell Resident Accused of Sexually Assaulting Two More Victims

The Caldwell woman and Maplewood teacher who was charged with sexually assaulting three Columbia High School students has now been charged with sexually assaulting two more male students, bringing the number of victims to 5.

The announcement was made this afternoon by Acting Essex County Prosecutor Carolyn A. Murray and Maplewood Police Chief Robert J. Nicole Dufault, 35, of Caldwell was arrested last night where she was originally charged with sexually assaulting three 15-year-old boys from Columbia High School.

Dufault is accused of multiple counts of first degree aggravated sexual assault and multiple counts of second degree endangering the welfare of a child. All five of the victims are 15-year-old boys who were students at Columbia High School.​

Columbia High School Teacher Charged with Sexual Assault

Newark Municipal Judge Marilyn E. Williams has been scheduled to hear city attorney Timothy Smith's argument there Sept. 26 on why his client, Columbia High School teacher Nicole L. Dufault, should have part of her $500,000 bail reduced.
Dufault, 35 of Caldwell, and Smith have been before Williams in Newark Municipal Court Sept. 19 to enter not guilty pleas against 25 counts of aggressive sexual assault of 13 to 16 year olds by a supervisor and 19 counts of endangering the welfare of a minor while on duty as levied by the Essex County Prosecutors Office.


Judge Williams then placed the $500,000 bail on Dufault without the 10 percent cash option. She also directed Dufault to surrender her passport, not to enter CHS property and not to have any contact with the five 15-year-old boys she is accused of having sexual relations with.​

Maplewood Teacher & Caldwell resident Nicole DuFault Indicted for Sexually Assaulting 6 Boys

Now, her lawyer is claiming previous brain surgery may be a factor in her alleged behavior.

A mother of two young sons, 3 and 5, [Nicole] DuFault watched her children be put into s[t]ate custody and her husband leave her, after the scandal broke. The encounters allegedly occurred over a 2 year span, in her car, and inside the Columbia high school classroom where she taught. One major piece of evidence is a video, reportedly showing the 35-year old teacher giving oral sex to one o[f] the victims, as another teen watched.

But DuFault's lawyer, Tim Smith, said his client had brain surgery before the sexual incidents, and that he believes "DuFault's brain trauma and surgery, which rendered her particularly vulnerable to the students' mentality, will factor significantly in the trial."
