More Questions Raised About Olentangy Teacher Charged With Rape

A local business which was assigned Rausenberg's former phone number has been inundated with calls for him about pharmaceuticals. The Clintonville Vapor Station owners were shocked to see Rausenberg's arrest Tuesday on the news. He's caused havoc in this shop the past year, but they don't even know him. Owner Chris Patton was working in the vapor shop when he saw the report of the arrest and the charges of rape and gross sexual imposition against the students.


Patton became familiar with Rausenberg’s name a year ago when he and his wife opened the store. “Immediately, we started getting phone calls from an overseas drug manufacturer, pharmaceutical place,” said Patton. He says there were constant calls, three to five a day, from overseas and out of state. “At least 400 or 500 for the whole year, it was so ridiculous. It just drove us nuts,” he added. The calls were pointed - asking about drugs or medication. “Sometimes they'd act like they're my best friend, ‘hey Matt, how you doing?’ thinking I was Matt. ‘Do you need your prescriptions refilled?’”​

After teacher arrest, parents urged talk to their kids

Olentangy Local Schools administrators are urging parents to talk to their children about the teacher who was arrested and charged with rape earlier this week.. Matthew D. Rausenberg, 39, is a third-grade teacher at Olentangy’s Arrowhead Elementary School. On Monday, he was charged by Delaware County sheriff’s deputies with rape and gross sexual imposition involving two students. Rausenberg was placed on unpaid administrative leave as soon as school officials were notified of the investigation. School Board: Teacher Accused of Rape Will Be Fired

The board president of a Delaware County school district where an elementary teacher is accused of sexually abusing two of his students is promising the teacher will be fired soon and that there will be an independent investigation of how the district handled the issue. Arrowhead teacher had been warned

An Olentangy Local School District third-grade teacher [Matthew D. Rausenberg] arrested and charged with rape last week previously had been warned by the district to limit his physical contact with students ... The complaint does not list dates for when the alleged incidents occurred, but the complaint states they occurred during school hours. In both incidents, the victims allegedly were sitting on Rausenberg's lap when the assaults took place.

Rausenberg received a documented warning from Olentangy schools in November 2012 after he admitted he had let students sit on his lap and give him back rubs. According to the warning, Rausenberg met with Arrowhead Principal William "Luke" Carlisle and Gale Marsh, the district's human resources director, on Nov. 28, 2012, to discuss the incidents. The meeting stemmed from a parent's complain about Rausenberg, which led to a district investigation. Rausenberg did not bring a union representative with him to the meeting. The document states Rausenberg told officials a student once had rubbed her elbow on his upper back when waiting in line to talk with him. He said other students then did the same after watching the first student. Rausenberg told officials he did not immediately make the student stop because he "did not want to reprimand the student or embarrass her." The document also states that "there were a few instances" when Rausenberg allowed students to sit on his knee at his desk. In the document, signed by Carlisle and Rausenberg, Carlisle states that he did "not suspect anything unethical from this situation." He did, however, ask Rausenberg to define boundaries more clearly for his students, the document shows.​

Delaware County Teacher Accused Of Sexually Abusing At Least Five Juveniles

A Delaware County Grand Jury has returned a 32-count indictment against 39-year-old Matthew D. Rausenberg of Columbus. The Grand Jury also announced there were five juvenile victims, up from the two originally reported. The indictment comes after authorities received a tip from a teenager, a former student of Rausenberg's. The next day Mr. Rausenberg was in municipal court. Rausenberg is charged with two counts of kidnapping - first-degree felonies, two counts of pandering sexually oriented matter involving a minor - second-degree felonies, and 28 counts of gross sexual imposition - all third-degree felonies.

The grand jury indictment accuses the former second grade teacher of sexually touching five students from 2006 to March 2015. O'Brien says investigators have found no evidence that Rausenberg threatened his victims but, she says, he didn't have to. "Keep in mind how the grooming process works. You get them to love you. You get them to trust you. Whatever you do is okay.” Prosecutors say investigators have recovered cell phone video evidence of the abuse; physical proof he betrayed the children who were taught to trust him.

‘This case is a work in progress’

County Prosecutor Carol O’Brien said that when prosecutors began investigating and speaking to witnesses, they decided on gross sexual imposition charges, instead of rape. “This case is a work in progress,” O’Brien said. “(The prosecutor’s office) reviewing what is initially reported and after additional discussions with victims and clarifying details, we determined indicting him on gross sexual imposition was better. We are indicting this case very conservatively.” O’Brien said rape requires penetration of some kind whereas gross sexual imposition only requires touching body parts for sexual gratification. “The difference is sexual conduct versus sexual contact,” O’Brien said.
