    Joel Calderon, 26, was a student-teacher attending Arizona State University. He was placed in a math classroom at Tempe High School where he met the female victim. The student and Calderon got to know each other on social media, police said. When school officials learned of the relationship, they contacted police. It is believed that multiple incidences of sexual contact occurred in Calderon's home. Police do not believe any contact happened on school grounds. Police said Calderon admitted to the relationship.

    According to authorities, [Joel] Calderon used social media to get to know the underage girl and that the two had sex multiple times at his home. Sgt. Michael Pooley says Calderon admitted to the inappropriate relationship with the 16-year-old student during an interview. Court documents say the alleged instances of sexual contact happened in early November and that Calderon was fired from his position.

Police believe the sexual conduct occurred at Calderon's residence on multiple occasions and not at the school. Pooley said Calderon used social media to get to know the student. Another student reported the alleged relationship to school officials, who then turned to police.

Police said Calderon used social media to get to know the student, which led to them becoming intimate. Court records say that Calderon became "friends" with the victim on Facebook. He also connected with other Tempe High School students on Facebook. Police said in Facebook chats Calderon wrote about how it was inappropriate for him to contact students outside of class. He also stated that he would not be considered a teacher because he was not employed by the high school. The sexual conduct occurred at Calderon’s residence on multiple occasions and not at the school, according to police.

    In a statement issued Monday, Tempe police said the physical relationship between [Joel] Calderon and the underage girl took place between Nov. 1 and Nov. 10. Another student alerted Tempe High administrators to the possible relationship, and school officials contacted authorities. In an interview with school officials, Calderon downplayed the extent of sexual contact he had with the underage girl but said she spent the night at his home on two separate occasions, according to court records. After his arrest on Nov.26, Calderon admitted having further sexual contact with the teen when police confronted him with the victim’s account of events, court records show. The teenager told police she consented to these acts, according to court records, but state law says the right to consent to sexual relationships does not occur until age 18.

    Court records show Calderon “friended” other Tempe High students during his teaching assignment and “made several references to how ‘inappropriate’ it was for him to contact students outside of class” but noted that he “would not be considered a teacher because he was not employed by the high school.”

    According to a probable cause statement, school officials were informed of the inappropriate relationship by an unrelated student. “[Joel] Calderon admitted to having a relationship with the student during an interview,” Pooley said. Police believe the sexual conduct occurred at Calderon’s home on multiple occasions beginning on Nov. 1, Pooley said. Calderon also admitted to using social media to contact the student, Pooley said. Police only know of one victim as of this afternoon but know Calderon reached out to other students through social media. During the Facebook chats, Calderon mentioned several times how it was inappropriate for him to contact students outside school, Pooley said.

    Former Tempe student teacher sentenced to prison in sex case

    A former student teacher at Tempe High School has been sentenced to three years in prison and lifetime probation in a sex case involving a student. A Maricopa County Superior Court spokeswoman says 27-year-old Joel Calderon was sentenced Friday by Judge Sam Myers. Calderon pleaded guilty in October to three counts of attempt to commit sexual conduct with a minor.

    [Joel] Calderon said he met the victim in the math department at Tempe High School, where he had been assigned since the beginning of the school year, said Tempe police Sgt. Mike Pooley said. School officials interviewed Calderon before calling police. In that and a subsequent interview with police, Calderon admitting to inappropriate contact with the student, but said intercourse never took place.

    Calderon "friended" the victim and other students on Facebook while student-teaching at Tempe High School and during the Facebook chats, he made several references to how "inappropriate" it was for him to contact students outside of class, the court document stated. He also wrote in the chats that he would not be considered a teacher because he was not employed by the high school.
