Cadillac News: Preliminary exam scheduled for MOISD teacher accused of having sexual relationship with student (Feb 12 2013) A preliminary exam for a teacher accused of having a sexual relationship with a student is scheduled for later this month. Janet Brown, 32, of Evart, was arrested Nov. 26 on three counts of felony third-degree criminal sexual conduct relating to an alleged sexual relationship with a male student. After waiving her right to a quick exam after her arraignment, the case moves forward with the preliminary exam, scheduled in Osceola County’s 77th District Court at 1:30 p.m. on Feb. 28....The investigation that uncovered the relationship began Nov. 19, when the school district became aware of what was originally believed to be "inappropriate communication" between Brown and the 16-year-old student. "We began investigating what had occurred and once we learned it was more than just communication, we contacted state police," said Curtis Finch, superintendent of the MOISD ... The alleged relationship was uncovered during Thanksgiving break when it was discovered that the student had a cell phone. Teen residents of Eagle Village are not allowed to have cell phones and the phone was confiscated. Finch said it was through cell-phone messages that the teacher-student relationship was initially discovered.
Guilty REED CITY, MI — A former Mecosta-Osceola County Intermediate School District teacher was sentenced to at least three years in prison this week after being convicted of charges relating to having sex with a student. Janet Brown, 34, of Evart was sentenced in Osceola County Circuit Court on Friday, April 24 after her conviction in March on one count apiece of criminal sexual conduct in the third degree and fourth degree, according to UpNorthLive.com.
