Protester at BLM rally on why he took part in Minneapolis arson

Branden Wolfe had hoped for a lighter sentence. Federal authorities accused him of conspiracy to commit arson in the burning of a police building in the days following the death of George Floyd. But Wolfe, 23, told Al Jazeera in an exclusive interview he does not feel guilty of the charge. Wolfe said he did not “conspire” to commit arson with four others charged when he ...

MDCR Director James E. White Issues Statement on Federal Civil Rights Charges Filed Against Officers Involved in the Death of George Floyd

James E. White, Director of the Michigan Department of Civil Rights, has issued the following statement in response to a federal grand jury filing civil rights charges against four Minneapolis police officers involved in the death of George Floyd. "The grand jury decision to bring federal civil rights charges against Derek Chauvin and three other Minneapolis police officers is justifiable and appropriate. It underscores the need for law enforcement agencies all over the country to learn from this unconscionable act and to institute tough and transparent polices to help ensure no one else faces the kind of unjustifiable force that ...

At George Floyd Square, Derek Chauvin's sentencing is 'first step' toward police accountability

When Derek Chauvin was found guilty on all three counts of murder and manslaughter in the death of George Floyd in April, the sizeable crowd at the intersection of 38th and Chicago burst into cheers and tears. But when Chauvin was sentenced to 22 1/2 years in prison Friday, a much smaller crowd gathered at the memorial known as George Floyd Square had a more muted reaction. Marcia Howard, a former teacher and organizer who can be found at the square nearly every day, led the crowd in chanting Floyd's name and “one down, three to go,” in reference to ...

Ex-cops charged in Floyd death want separation from Chauvin

Three former Minneapolis police officers charged with violating George Floyd’s civil rights are asking that their federal trials be separated from the trial of Derek Chauvin, who has already been convicted on state murder charges for kneeling on Floyd’s neck as the Black man pleaded for air. Attorneys for J. Kueng and Tou Thao said in court filings Tuesday that their clients would be unfairly prejudiced if they went to trial alongside Chauvin. An attorney for Thomas Lane filed a motion asking to join in his co-defendants’ request. Keung’s attorney, Tom Plunkett, said evidence against Chauvin would confuse the jury ...

3 ex-officers ask to block streaming of trial in Floyd death

Attorneys for three former Minneapolis police officers charged in George Floyd's death asked a judge Thursday to bar their upcoming trial from being livestreamed, saying some witnesses won’t testify if the proceedings are broadcast. The request from attorneys for Thomas Lane, J. Kueng and Tou Thao is an about-face from their earlier request to have the trial publicly broadcast, and is opposed by prosecutors and news outlets including The Associated Press. Hennepin County Judge Peter Cahill said he would rule on the issue later. Lane, Kueng and Thao are scheduled to stand trial next March on charges of aiding and ...

A Texas agency on Monday approved a request that George Floyd be granted a posthumous pardon for a 2004 drug arrest made by a now-indicted ex-Houston police officer whose case history is under scrutiny following a deadly drug raid. The unanimous recommendation by the seven member Texas Board of Pardons and Paroles will now be forwarded to Gov. Greg Abbott, who will make the final decision. It was not clear when Abbott would decide the fate of the request. A spokeswoman for Abbott did not immediately return an email seeking comment. 2 officers plan to testify about George Floyd’s killing

A former Minneapolis police officer charged in George Floyd’s killing testified Tuesday that he was relying on his fellow officers to care for Floyd’s medical needs while he controlled onlookers as police tried to arrest the Black man. Minneapolis agrees to pay almost $9M to settle lawsuits involving Derek Chauvin

The city of Minneapolis on Thursday agreed to pay roughly $8.9 million to settle two lawsuits involving former police officer Derek Chauvin, who was charged with killing George Floyd in 2020. In the lawsuits — which stemmed from 2017 arrests — two people alleged that Chauvin pressed his knee into their necks years before the same tactic was fatal during his arrest of Floyd. The city announced that John Pope will receive $7.5 million and Zoya Code will receive $1.375 million. “He should have been fired in 2017. He should have been held accountable in 2017,” Mayor Jacob Frey said ...
