    Rape victim alleges teachers, staff turned 'blind eye' to pattern of abuse

    Nine Pawtucket teachers and staff members were added to a lawsuit for allegedly ignoring a pattern of sexual harassment by students and one teacher, that preceded the rape of a disabled 13-year old in a school bathroom. The June 17, 2016 rape at Pawtucket Learning Academy (PLA) happened as the victim was waiting for her father to pick her up at the school. Ivander DeBurgo, who was 18 at the time of the crime, pleaded no contest to one count of first-degree child molestation and was sentenced in 2017 to 25 years in prison, with 10 to serve.     In a different case that also involved the disabled plaintiff, now retired teacher David Morton, 74, was charged with a misdemeanor count of simple assault and battery. Morton allegedly "smacked and grabbed" her butt. The charge was filed as a "not-guilty" plea in February, meaning it will be dismissed if Morton's record is clean for one year. According to the amended complaint, Pawtucket's City Solicitor Frank Milos filed the misdemeanor charge "in order to limit suit damages and control the prosecution."
