    Syracuse teacher sues deputy over arrest for speeding;

    Syracuse schoolteacher Michaela Kiewra, 60, was pulled over twice for speeding as she rushed to respond to a reported fire alarm at her home. The second time, she was handcuffed, questioned about drugs and alcohol, and charged with a misdemeanor for fleeing police. She’s now suing Onondaga County Sheriff’s Deputy Sean Andrews and the sheriff’s office, saying he needlessly roughed her up during the arrest.

    Deputy who stopped speeding teacher was keeping community safe (Your Letters)

    To the Editor:

    I read your recent article, “Teacher speeds home in Clay for fire alarm. She ends up in handcuffs, charged with fleeing police” (Oct. 14, 2021). As the president of the Onondaga County Deputy Sheriffs’ Police Association, I believe it is necessary on behalf of my membership to clarify a few things in your article.

    Do the citizens of Onondaga County really want the police to allow a person to operate a motor vehicle at a reckless speed of 58 mph in a 30 mph posted speed zone near a school? If you live on Wetzel Road, I would bet the answer would be “no.” Also, do the citizens of Onondaga County want the public to comply with lawful police orders when they are stopped? The article refers to Michaela Kiewra as a teacher. Do the citizens of Onondaga County want our teachers driving in a reckless manner? What do Kiewra’s alleged actions demonstrate to her young students? What would we all have said if Kiewra had hit an innocent citizen with her vehicle?

    The citizens of Onondaga County have some of the best and most dedicated police, fire and EMS service in the country. The men and women in these professions, to include Sgt. Sean Andrews, place their lives on the line each and every day for all of us. Recklessly operating your personal vehicle near a school, and not following directions of the police, are not the way to handle an alleged fire alarm received on a cellphone. Calling the fire department in this situation would have avoided any law enforcement encounter whatsoever and would not have forced Andrews to engage Kiewra.

    As president of the sheriffs’ police union, I would respectfully ask Syracuse.com to investigate the facts a little further before publishing such a negative article about the police officers who serve the citizens of Onondaga County. Andrews is a dedicated, highly trained police officer who was recently commended for solving a homicide investigation in Onondaga County. Syracuse.com and the citizens of Onondaga County should be proud of Andrews for keeping them safe.
