Prior arrest restricts Lee County Teacher of the Year from state competition

The Lee County teacher’s union says it’s outraged the Teacher of the Year will not be recognized at the state level. James Jones, a South Fort Myers High School teacher, says it’s because of a past arrest that was wiped off his record.

Makayla Quarles is a former student of Jones. She was there the night he was arrested. She says her husband at the time was abusing her and the only person she could think to run to was Jones. Former student recalls night of Lee Co. teacher's arrest

20-year-old MaKayla Quarles graduated from South Fort Myers High back in 2011, and had Marc Jones as a teacher for a year-and-a-half. Quarles says back in June of 2013, she and her ex-husband got into a physical argument. Without her parents around, Quarles says the only people she could turn to for safety were Jones and his wife. "My ex ended up showing up at [Jones'] house, and the cops were called," said Quarles. "They ended up mistaking Marc for the perpetrator."

Quarles says she never saw Jones interact with deputies, as she locked herself in his house for her own safety. But she does know Jones was acting in her best interest, and she nows calls him her hero. "Marc literally put his life on the line to protect myself and my son," she said. News reports from the night of the incident show Jones was arrested on a charge of resisting arrest. Quarles says Jones later had the charge expunged from his record.
