    Former Okaw art teacher arrested on sex charges


    James R. Dierkes, 29, of Donnellson, has been charged in information filed on Friday by the office of Fayette County State’s Attorney Joshua Morrison with criminal sexual assault and aggravated criminal sexual assault. Dierkes was an Okaw art teacher from 2012-18, resigning from his teaching position in August 2018, according to Vandalia Superintendent of Schools Dr. Jennifer Garrison. He graduated from the Illinois State Police academy in December 2018 and completed field training in May of this year, according to online records.     An Illinois State Police trooper was arrested on allegations he had inappropriate sexual contact with a pair of females — at least one of which was a minor — while he worked at an area high school.     Trials for Dierkes, others postponed due to pandemic

    The jury trial for a former Vandalia teacher and state police officer, along with all other jury trials scheduled for January in Fayette County, has been postponed. Judge Douglas Jarman said during a pretrial hearing held by Zoom last Thursday that the trial date for James T. Dierkes, scheduled to get under way next Monday, had been vacated due to the pandemic. During last Thursday’s hearing, Brian Polinski, Dierkes’ attorney, asked that a 402 conference be held either “next month or the month after.” Jarman, who is the chief judge of the Fourth Judicial Circuit, explained to Dierkes that the ...
